The land for Union Cemetery was purchased in 1752, but, without finding the oldest grave marker, there is no way of knowing exactly when the first interment took place, according Richard Dean, a longtime member of the Holbrook Historical Commission and Holbrook Historical Society.

“A whole bunch of graves are missing, the headstones broken or gone, so we can only go by what is there now,” Dean said.

There are resources available as clues to help locate graves, such as the Waldo Sprague list compiled in the mid-1850s and a list of Union Cemetery graves compiled by the late journalist and Holbrook historian Wesly Cote, but both resources are incomplete.
